Right now, most AI products call themselves a copilot, an assistant, or an agent. Sometimes, all three on the same landing page. The words get used almost interchangeably in marketing, which makes them sound like a style choice. But they’re not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each label describes something specific: how much of your live data the tool can actually see, and how much of the work it’s allowed to do without you. Get that wrong when you’re choosing a tool, and you end up with something that talks a good game but still leaves the actual job to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Copilot<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A copilot sits inside a workflow you’re already running and suggests the next step. It rides along in an existing screen, offering a next move rather than making one. You still have to click, apply, and confirm. Most native “AI suggestions” features inside software fall into this category. Useful, but only as fast as you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assistant<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An assistant answers questions and can draft or retrieve information for you. Paste in a report and ask it to summarize, and it will. But it stops at the edge of that conversation. An agent has access to your live data and permission to act inside connected systems. Tell it what you need, and it completes the task rather than describing how you’d do it yourself.
