Plenty of products calling themselves an AI agent are really just a chat interface with a confident name. They sound capable. They use the right words. And when you actually ask one to complete a task instead of describe one, the gap shows up fast. Ask it to reprice a stalled listing, and instead of doing it, it tells you how you might want to think about repricing stalled listings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sounding capable and being capable are two different things, and the market right now makes it genuinely hard to tell them apart from the outside. We already broke down the <\/a>difference between a copilot, an assistant, and an agent<\/a> in an earlier post. This one is about proving which of those you’re actually looking at, with a test you can run on any tool in about five minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three things a working agent needs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Real data access<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It has to see your actual, live data, not a file you upload once and hope stays current. A tool that only knows what you paste into it is working from a snapshot, and a snapshot goes stale the moment anything in your business changes. Ask it a question about today’s inventory, and if the honest answer requires you to go export a fresh report first, it doesn’t have real data access. It has whatever you handed it last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Permission to act<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It has to be able to complete the task inside your systems, not just recommend a next step and hand it back to you. A recommendation is useful. A recommendation isn’t the job done. If getting the actual result still means you opening a different tab and doing the work yourself, the “agent” part of the pitch was doing more marketing than describing what happens next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A clear trail of what it did<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

You need to be able to see what changed, and undo it if needed. An agent that acts without leaving a record is asking for blind trust, and blind trust isn’t a reasonable thing to extend to software making changes on your account. This matters more as the stakes go up. A wrong suggestion costs you a few minutes. A wrong price pushed live with no record of the change costs a lot more than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to tell which one you have<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here’s a short, practical test: ask it to complete one real task, start to finish, and see what comes back. Not “what should I do about my stalled listings,” but “find my stalled listings and fix the pricing.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If what comes back is a bulleted list of suggestions, you’ve got a copilot or an assistant with an agent’s name on the box. If what comes back is the job done, with a record of what changed, you’ve got the real thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Run that same test again a week later. A tool that passed once but can’t repeat it consistently isn’t reliable enough to actually hand work to, regardless of what it’s called on the pricing page. Consistency, not a single good demo, is what turns a tool into something you can actually build a routine around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
