What is Walmart Fulfillment Services?

A breakdown of how Walmart Fulfillment Services works, what it costs, and whether it fits your store.

Shipping is one of the least glamorous parts of running an online store, and also one of the parts most likely to make or break your customer experience. Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) exists to take that burden off your plate, storing, picking, packing, and shipping your Walmart Marketplace orders so you can spend your time on sourcing and growth instead of packing tape.

Walmart still trails Amazon by a wide margin (it holds roughly 6% of US ecommerce compared to Amazon’s share of over a third), but it remains the second-largest online retailer in the country, and its marketplace keeps growing. If you’re already selling on Walmart, or thinking about it, here’s what WFS actually does, what it costs in 2026, and where it still falls short.

How Walmart Fulfillment Services works

WFS is only open to sellers who already have an active, approved Walmart Marketplace account. You can’t sign up for WFS on its own. Once your Marketplace account is live, here’s the general path:

  1. Go to the WFS section of Seller Center and submit the enrollment form, agreeing to the program’s terms.
  2. Confirm your products meet WFS requirements (more on those below).
  3. Create an inbound order from Manage Inventory, choose a carrier, and prep your shipment according to Walmart’s routing guide.
  4. Drop off or schedule pickup of your shipment to the assigned fulfillment center.
  5. Once your inventory arrives and is checked in, Walmart handles storage, picking, packing, and delivery for every order that comes in.

You don’t need to create separate listings to use WFS. You can convert existing seller-fulfilled listings to Walmart-fulfilled directly from your Product Catalog. Walmart doesn’t enforce a hard inventory minimum either, though it recommends keeping enough stock on hand to avoid running out mid-demand spike.

What products qualify

Products need to meet a few requirements to be eligible for WFS at all:

  • Non-perishable and shelf-stable, with no temperature control requirements
  • Ships to fulfillment centers within the contiguous US
  • Up to 500 lbs. including packaging, with a maximum of 120″ x 105″ x 93″

Within that range, Walmart splits items into two tiers that affect both shipping method and fees. Standard items (150 lbs. or less, with a longest side under 108 inches) ship as small parcel. Anything heavier or larger, up to that 500-lb. and 120-inch ceiling, is classified as big and bulky and ships by freight instead, with its own fee structure.

What Walmart Fulfillment Services costs

One thing WFS has going for it: there’s no sign-up fee and no monthly subscription. You pay a fulfillment fee per unit and a storage fee based on volume and time, and that’s it.

Fulfillment fees for standard items start at $3.45 for anything at or under 1 lb., and scale up from there based on shipping weight (the greater of actual weight or dimensional weight). A 20-lb. item runs roughly $12 to $13, and heavier items in the 51-lb.-plus range start around $17.55 plus $0.40 per additional pound. A few categories add a flat surcharge on top of the base fee: apparel and hazmat items each add $0.50, items priced under $10 add $1, and oversized items add $3 to $20 depending on how far outside standard dimensions they fall. Big and bulky items, which ship by freight, use a separate flat-rate formula instead.

Storage fees run $0.75 per cubic foot per month for most of the year. That climbs during the October to December peak season for items stored longer than 30 days, and inventory that sits for more than a year gets hit with a steeper long-term storage rate. Walmart’s own cost estimator is the most reliable way to price out a specific product before you commit.

Why sellers use WFS

Support and returns are handled for you

Any customer service issue tied to a WFS order, including returns, goes through Walmart’s own support team rather than landing in your inbox. Returns fall under Walmart’s Free & Easy Returns policy, and if the return is due to Walmart’s error (lost, damaged, or misdelivered), you don’t pay the return processing fee.

Better visibility in search

WFS listings carry the “Fulfilled by Walmart” and delivery speed badges, which tend to rank higher in Marketplace search. For shoppers comparing similar products, that badge alone can be the deciding factor.

Multichannel fulfillment, not just Walmart

This is the part that’s changed the most since WFS first launched. Walmart now offers Multichannel Solutions (MCS), which lets you use the same WFS inventory to fulfill orders placed on other channels, including your own website, eBay, Etsy, Shopify, and even Amazon. It’s Walmart’s direct answer to Amazon’s Multi-Channel Fulfillment program, and it means your WFS stock no longer has to sit idle just because an order came from somewhere other than Walmart.com.

Real-time performance data

Your Seller Center dashboard shows live sales and delivery data, and you can pull the same information through direct APIs or third-party integrations if you’re managing inventory across multiple platforms.

Where WFS still falls short

Even with MCS in the picture, WFS has real limits worth weighing before you commit a big share of your catalog to it, and they add to the other challenges that come with selling on Walmart Marketplace in general.

Domestic shipping only. WFS fulfillment centers only ship within the contiguous US, so international orders still need a separate solution.

Strict product rules. Between the weight and size ceilings and Walmart’s prohibited products list, not every catalog fits neatly into WFS. Items like alcohol, ammunition, certain medicines, and other regulated goods can’t be fulfilled through the program at all, and Walmart can add or remove restricted categories without much notice.

Setup still takes real effort. Applying, prepping inventory to spec, and waiting on approval isn’t instant, and getting it wrong on the first shipment (mislabeled boxes, incorrect prep) triggers chargeback fees.

Selling internationally through WFS

If you’re importing goods to sell through WFS, the program still works, provided your products clear US Customs, meet standard WFS requirements, and follow the packaging rules in Walmart’s WFS Routing Guide. You’ll also need a US address on file for returns. Walmart’s fulfillment centers handle storage and shipping once your inventory clears customs, but you’re still responsible for customs clearance itself, arranging a freight forwarder, and covering any import duties.

How to get more out of your WFS listings

Getting a product WFS-eligible is only step one. A few habits separate sellers who see real lift from those who don’t:

Keep inventory in stock consistently, since WFS badges and rankings depend on your ability to actually fulfill demand without running dry. Check the Item Conversion Report periodically, since it flags which of your seller-fulfilled listings are the best candidates for WFS based on Walmart’s own sales data. Keep your listing quality score high, since content quality directly affects how high your products rank in Walmart search. And watch your Sales dashboard regularly so you can catch demand spikes or slowdowns early enough to act on them.

Is WFS the right fit for your business

WFS makes the most sense for products that are easy to ship, fall well within the size and weight limits, and sell primarily on Walmart.com. If you’re moving oversized freight or already have an efficient fulfillment setup elsewhere, the math may not favor switching. And you don’t have to choose WFS just to get faster shipping badges. Walmart’s expedited shipping options are available to seller-fulfilled listings too, as long as you can hit the delivery windows yourself.

If you’re on the fence, testing one or two of your best-selling, WFS-eligible products for a few months gives you real data to work from before committing your whole catalog.

Managing WFS alongside everything else

Running Walmart fulfillment well gets a lot harder once you’re also selling on Amazon, since juggling two separate dashboards, two sets of order data, and two profit pictures eats into the time WFS is supposed to free up.

FeedbackWhiz Profits’ Order Manager can show your Walmart orders visible right alongside your Amazon activity, so you can see which listings are actually worth the switch. See what Seller 365 covers for $69 a month and get the full picture in one place.
