  • International fuel surcharges adjust according to global fuel markets

Other variable fees

Notable trends throughout 2024

The most significant patterns in FedEx’s 2024 fee changes include:

  1. More frequent adjustments to fuel surcharges
  2. Greater differentiation in peak vs. non-peak pricing
  3. Increased focus on special handling fees
  4. Enhanced granularity in residential delivery pricing

Impact assessment

These changes have had varying effects across different shipping profiles:

Small package shippers

The cumulative impact of base rate increases and surcharge modifications has led to an effective increase of 7-9% for typical shipments.

Large volume shippers

Enterprise-level customers have seen more moderate increases due to customized pricing agreements, though peak season impacts remain significant.

International shippers

Cross-border shipments have experienced the most complex adjustments, with combined impacts from multiple fee modifications affecting total shipping costs.

January 1, 2025 announced changes

FedEx has announced significant rate adjustments and surcharge modifications effective January 6, 2025:

General rate increase (GRI)

  • FedEx Express rates will increase by an average of 5.9% for U.S. domestic, U.S. export, and U.S. import services

  • Third Party Billing surcharge will increase to 5.5% of total shipment charges
  • Additional Handling Surcharge will be updated based on dimensions and weight
  • The Address Correction charge will be modified for FedEx Express and FedEx Ground services

Service-specific changes

FedEx Freight will implement several changes:

  • Extreme length surcharge will apply to shipments with dimensions of 12 feet or greater
  • High-cost delivery fee will be assessed for specific ZIP codes
  • Close of Business delivery service will be discontinued for FedEx Freight Priority and Economy

International service updates

  • FedEx International Priority Express (IPE) service will be discontinued for U.S. export shipments
  • Various international surcharges will be adjusted to reflect market conditions

Planning ahead

Shippers should prepare for these 2025 changes by:

  • Reviewing current shipping profiles against new rate structures
  • Analyzing the impact of surcharge modifications on total shipping costs
  • Considering service alternatives where cost-effective
  • Updating budgets and forecasts to reflect new rates
  • Consulting with FedEx representatives about potential optimization strategies

For the most current information about rates and surcharges, always refer to FedEx’s official documentation or consult with your FedEx account representative. These changes may be subject to modification, and additional updates may be announced prior to implementation.
