How to lower your Q4 FBA storage costs by selling on more channels

Peak storage rates are running. Extra sales channels and Amazon MCF can get your FBA stock out the door sooner.

Warehouse filled with boxes and pallets for Q4 peak season

Every cubic foot of standard-size inventory you keep in FBA right now costs about three times what it cost in September. October’s bill is already running, and Amazon Q4 storage fees stay at that rate until December 31.

That rate applies to every unit on the shelf, including the slow movers and the stock you bought for a channel you haven’t launched yet. You can’t negotiate it. You can change how long each unit sits there.

That’s where more sales channels come in. Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF) lets you ship orders from Walmart, Shopify, and TikTok Shop out of the same FBA stock you already hold. More places to sell means units leave sooner, and units that leave sooner stop paying peak rates sooner. This post covers the fee jump, the math, the channel rules worth knowing, and the cases where MCF isn’t worth it.

What changes with Amazon FBA storage fees from October to December

Amazon bills FBA storage by the cubic foot. It measures the space your inventory takes up as a daily average across the month, then charges you the following month. The rate depends on the time of year and your product’s size tier.

For 2026, the published standard-size rates are $0.78 per cubic foot from January through September and $2.40 per cubic foot from October through December. Oversize items run $0.56 and $1.40.

Do the division and standard-size storage lands at roughly 3.1 times the off-peak rate. Oversize is gentler, at 2.5 times. So “roughly 3x” holds for most standard-size products and runs a little high for bulkier ones.

One more cost stacks on top. Amazon adds surcharges on inventory that has sat in its warehouses for a long time, and those apply on top of the monthly rate. A slow mover in Q4 can get hit from both sides.

Why sell-through is the lever

A second channel doesn’t change the rate Amazon charges. It changes how many days your stock sits at that rate. Storage is billed on the average space you occupy each day, so a unit that leaves in mid-November stops adding to your bill for the rest of the month and every month after.

Here’s an illustrative example, using the published rates above. Say a case of 100 units takes up 10 cubic feet. At $2.40, that case costs $24 a month to store in Q4. At $0.78, the same case would cost $7.80 a month in February. If a new channel helps you clear the case by the end of November instead of the end of December, you skip December’s $24 entirely.

Now look at the per-unit number. $24 across 100 units is $0.24 per unit per month. That adds up across a big catalog, but it’s small per unit, so the storage savings alone may not carry the case for a new channel. The extra sales are the point. Units that would have sat on the shelf turn into orders, and every month they don’t sit is a month of peak storage you don’t pay. Think of the storage savings as the tiebreaker.

How Amazon MCF lets one pool of FBA stock serve other channels

Amazon multi-channel fulfillment takes orders from channels other than Amazon and fills them from the inventory already sitting in Amazon’s fulfillment centers. You don’t split stock between warehouses, and you don’t sign up with a second 3PL. One pool serves every channel, and each order that ships reduces the same inventory count.

Each channel has its own quirks. Here’s what to know before you list.

Walmart

Walmart Marketplace doesn’t allow delivery through Amazon Logistics, so MCF orders for Walmart have to ship with other carriers. Amazon’s guidance is to block its own carrier on those orders, and manual orders should go out in blank boxes. Most sellers automate this through an integration partner instead of keying orders in by hand.

Amazon has also attached a surcharge to blocking its carrier and has waived it for set periods, so check the current terms before you run your numbers.

Shopify

Amazon offers an official MCF app for Shopify. Once you link your Seller Central account, Shopify orders can route to Amazon for fulfillment automatically, and inventory levels can push from Amazon back to your store. If a branded unboxing matters to your Shopify customers, check what packaging options MCF offers before you commit.

TikTok Shop

TikTok Shop orders can flow to MCF through an integration, and MCF’s delivery speed and tracking help you meet marketplace delivery standards. TikTok has shifted its fulfillment requirements this year, so confirm the current rules in Seller Center before you list.

Watch your stock levels here. A spike on TikTok Shop can drain inventory you planned to sell on Amazon.

What MCF costs, and is Amazon MCF worth it?

MCF isn’t free. Amazon charges a per-unit fulfillment fee on every MCF order, based on the item’s size and weight, and it raised those fees in January 2026. That fee sits on top of whatever the sales channel charges you in referral and other fees.

So the question for any SKU is a margin question. Take the price on the new channel, subtract that channel’s fees and the MCF fee, and see what’s left. If the result beats what that unit would earn waiting out Q4 at $2.40 per cubic foot, you have a candidate. If the margin is thin, a cheaper storage month won’t rescue it.

MCF tends to fall flat in three cases. The first is a thin-margin SKU where the MCF fee eats the profit. The second is a SKU that’s close to stocking out on Amazon, where a new channel would pull units away from a listing that already sells. The third is a product with channel-specific requirements you can’t meet, such as particular packaging or compliance rules. In all three, leave the SKU on Amazon and look elsewhere in your catalog.

Which SKUs to expand first

Start where storage costs bite hardest, and the risk runs lowest. A good first candidate has four traits. It has a large footprint per unit, since storage is billed by volume and bulky items pay more per unit. It has plenty of weeks of stock cover. It has enough margin to absorb the MCF fee. And it has no risk of stocking out on Amazon.

Bulky products with healthy stock are the natural starting point, as long as the margin math holds. Fast sellers that are close to running out stay on Amazon. Let the slower stock find a second home.

Start with one or two channels instead of all three. A smaller launch is easier to monitor, and you’ll learn which channel moves your stock fastest before you spread out.

Why automation decides how fast you can expand

MCF handles the fulfillment. The slow part of expansion is everything before it: building listings that meet each marketplace’s data requirements, keeping inventory counts accurate across channels, and getting every new order to the right place.

Do that by hand, and your peak window shrinks while you wait on spreadsheets. Peak rates run through December 31, so every week spent on setup is a week of the window gone. Our breakdown of the real cost of multichannel expansion explains why this work, not the fees, is usually the real expense.

UniCon by Threecolts takes on that work. It keeps one central catalog, so you import your products once instead of rebuilding them for each marketplace. You can swiftly cross-list with AI attribute mapping and automatically synchronize inventory and stock levels. Inventory syncs in real time, so when your last unit sells on one channel, every other channel updates. Smart order routing sends incoming orders to the right warehouse automatically, and with your FBA stock as the source, orders from Walmart, Shopify, and TikTok Shop route without anyone keying them in.

UniCon supports Amazon, Walmart, Shopify, TikTok Shop, Shein, Temu, eBay, and Target+, and you can start with one or two channels and add more as you go. Your first 100 SKUs can be live in 48 hours. If you’re still comparing options, our roundup of the best multichannel listing platforms for Amazon sellers shows what to look for in multichannel listing software and multichannel inventory sync.

Start before the peak window closes

Peak storage rates run through December 31, so the sooner a unit finds a second channel, the less of that window it spends on the shelf. UniCon connects your FBA stock to Walmart, Shopify, and TikTok Shop and automates the listing and order work that slows expansion down. Book a free MCF setup review to get started.
